After a failed attempt with a memory foam topper, I decided that what I wanted to soften our firm mattress was a feather bed. I researched the available brands on Amazon and decided on this one, because it was baffled and the corners were gusseted.

It arrived promptly, of course, and I was excited to use it - it definitely was nice and puffy until I put the mattress cover over it - then it lost most of its volume. It was still soft, but I really wanted that snuggly feeling, so I decided to take the cover off. At that point, all feathers broke loose. The bed is filled with small feathers and they apparently don't want to stay in. I've been poked repeatedly each night for the past three nights (with the pad off), and someone always comes to breakfast with feathers in her/his hair on stuck in the pjs.

Rather than pay extra for another protector (a specialty featherbed cover), I will be returning this and ordering with either a higher threadcount, more down vs. feathers, and/or an extra layer of protective fabric built-in.
