Leick 10059 Favorite Finds Rustic Slate Hall Stand Review

It is a solid wood table -- ash hardwood with oak veneer, which is hard to come by. No particle board, no pressed wood at all. It's actually hard to tell which pieces are veneer. The legs are solid oak. The only assembly required is to attach the legs and pop the bottom shelf in--that is after I finally found the instructions which were "static stuck" upside down to a piece of white styrofoam in the box. It arrived very well packed, no damage. It is a bit darker in wood color than I expected, more of a reddish brown tone, but darker than other oak furniture I have in that tone. My biggest disappointment though is that the "running slate detail" does not go all the way around. Since I am placing mine up against an open stair railing, I was not happy there will be no slate visible from the stair landing below. My slate is also entirely grey in color with no variations,but still nice looking. I also was under the impression this furniture is made in Wisconsin--not so, it is made in China. I don't care, but a bit misleading. There were no instructions regarding care in the box whatsoever, so I am still trying to determine if the finish is water resistant, hopefully polyurethane, or not. I have contacted the manufacturer for more information.

When I called the manufacturer I was told the finish is just a lacquer and not water resistant at all. However, they did finally respond to an email I sent asking for a sample. So I took the small sample and left a wet cloth on it overnight to test the finish for water resistance. The next day there was no damage whatsoever to that sample. It is, however, not totally waterproof I discovered when my son left a hot cup of coffee on it. I have a slight ring mark that is difficult to see, but still you should be careful with it. I leave a nice looking coaster on it now all the time.
