I bought this mixer sometime in mid-October at Boscovs kind of on a whim because it was on sale. My original mixer (An older sunbeam model i bought used) which i had for years had died and out of desperation I replaced it with a horrible piece of crap (because that was what was in stock locally at the time and I NEEDED a mixer to finish a cake order) So I was always on the look out to replace that thing.

While I'm convinced nothing will compare to my original Sunbeam mixer, this one gets the job done, and quite well. I typically use stand mixers for making cake frosting, which is what this one is primarily used for - although we make mashed potatoes in it from time to time and it's whisked up some beautiful angel food cake as well.

The construction of the machine is great, as it is die cast metal, the black parts at the head have a thin rubber type coating which just adds to grip if you happen to have butter or the like on your hands.

-While the bowl position is adjustable, I find it difficult to adjust, my original mixer just had a lever that allowed you to push and lock the bowl into position, With this mixer, the turn table locks into one of two holes in the base to set the bowl position, trying to remove the turn table from the hole it's in requires some force and I'm always worried I'm just going to break it because the turn table is one of the few plastic parts on this machine.

-A neat thing about this mixer is the beater holes are color coated. The attachment hole to the left has a small green dot about the size of an eraser head near it, while the other has no marking at all. Attachments that are required to be put in a certain way have a color coded plastic skirting on the shaft, one being green, and the other grey.

-The machine has a great deal of power, and I have never really find a need to go beyond whatever the number is in the middle. I also find it considerate that the machine when first turned on starts out a little slower before moving up to the speed you selected. I imagine this is so you do not get a face full of flour and to prevent splashing for more liquid based recipes. I have two small complaints about this mixer and one of the two is pretty insignificant. The bigger complaint is on higher speeds the head of the machine seems to almost hop, not to where the machine is actually hopping around the counter (which would be amusing but disastrous) but it hops enough to make me wonder if the hopping will eventually damage the latch which locks the head of the mixer in the up/down position. My second teeny complaint is sometimes in the middle of the mixer there seems to be a small "deadzone" where everywhere else the batter is pretty well incorporated but I can still see little bits of flour or sugar in the center, it does eventually incorporate it, but I usually just swipe through with a spatula to speed things along.

-The only attachments I have not used is the bread hooks, so for any avid bread maker I can't personally recommend this machine. So if you'd be broken hearted if this machine does not do well with bread dough, I would either look elsewhere or wait until someone who has used it for dough reviews it.

I'd like to classify myself above an amateur baker as I usually do several paid cakes a year but I am certainly no professional. With that in mind I would recommend this mixer to someone who like me; bakes regularly and still wants something that functions great without breaking the bank.
