My family has been making homemade ice cream for many, many years. It was a tradition that started with my grandparents that has carried on down the line. Back in my childhood days, we had a hand-crank White Mountain ice cream maker. My cousins and I would take turns cranking while the other sat on the bucket to keep it still. It was difficult work, but worth the labor. So many years later when I was offered an ice cream maker, my wife and I selected a hand-crank model. We thought we would pass down this labor of love.Unfortunately, the hand-crank ice cream maker mostly sits in the closet. It's a bit rusty after 15 years, and the kids don't want to crank it. The cranking IS more laborious than I recalled, and when it's hot outside nobody wants to crank. So we can't put it all off on the kids. I missed homemade ice cream.
So when the opportunity arose to test-drive the White Mountain PBWMIME612-SHP Appalachian Series Wooden Bucket 6-Quart Electric Ice Cream Maker, I jumped at the chance. I was hopeful that this might be the "middle ground" I was looking for. Upon receipt, I immediately opened it up and read the instructions, allowing the bucket to soak in water overnight and pre-washing all of the inner components. I was pleased to find that the dasher and steel canister are of the same quality of my 15-year-old hand crank AND of my grandparent's old maker. Quality has not gone down in this case! The ice cream maker shipped in a nice, sturdy cardboard box that is suitable for long-term storage. Immediately the smell of the pine bucket struck me. It smelled great, and was very heavy and well-constructed.
When the family gathered for the 4th of July, my mom put together the ingredients for my grandma's pineapple sherbert. It was a very hot day, so icy sherbert sounded much better than creamy ice cream. The process is basically the same, only the ingredients differ slightly. I brought the new White Mountain ice cream maker and opened it up. I set it in a metal wash-tub to make sure any briny water that wept from the side would not mess up the deck. After filling the canister with the ingredients, I set it in the bucket and packed chunked ice around it, layered with rock salt. I then hooked up the electric motor and let it go. The motor was not quiet, but was not obnoxious either. For pre-made ice cream or at a function where you can make it outside, it was not distracting. The motor DID get pretty warm, but it was not so hot that it burned me. When stopping to add ingredients and check the progress, it had no problems re-starting. After finishing, we removed the motor, packed the canister with ice and blankets, and let it "set up" for a bit.
The result? We enjoyed absolutely awesome pineapple sherbert that day. It was SO much better and more fresh than what you get at the stores. And we enjoyed the family tradition of making ice cream. Everyone loved it, and several commented on how nice the ice cream maker was.
The White Mountain ice cream maker is not cheap, either by price or quality. It comes with a 5-year warranty, so I'm satisfied it will hold up or any issues will be resolved. But it was certainly worth the experience we will share many times over. And I can further attest that some of the other ice cream makers I checked out in stores came no-where near touching this one in terms of workmanship.
