Why switch from Keurig to Tassimo? Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte, and Cafe Ole. Tassimo does them, and for the most part Keurig does not. Keurig has in fact come out with a new machine called the Rivo but there were two things stopping me from purchasing that one: 1) Milk tank on the side of the Rivo instead of milk pods... I can't be bothered with keeping milk in the fridge and cleaning the tank, 2) Price... Rivo is a lot more expensive.

First, some thoughts on the Espresso and Cappuccino that comes out of the Tassimo after all, it's why I switched in the first place. I do like the Cappuccino and Espresso that this machine makes... it's good. Is it on par with what I've had at a really good coffee shop or at a cafe in Italy?... not really. Let's face it Espresso and Cappuccino coming out of a $5000 machine, made from freshly ground coffee, with fresh milk, lovingly crafted by a trained Barista is going to be WAY better than anything coming out of the Tassimo. Expectations adjusted, I think this is a very good machine for the $$$ and I like the fact that a decent cup of Cappuccino is now a quick and convenient option for me (and for guests at my home).

Next, coffee. Does the Tassimo make a good cup of coffee? Well, yes and no. Yes the coffee I made (King of Joe Dark Roast) was good, but I like Green Mountain Coffee Dark Magic for the Keurig better. So it's not the machine, it's the coffee. All things being equal, I'd say the Tassimo / Keurig coffee making capabilities are identical. As a matter of fact, they even operate in a very similar manner... water goes in a holding tank, you turn the machine on, you put your cup under dispenser, load a pod, push a button, out comes coffee. There are subtle differences though and here are the ones that are really important to me...

Power on / energy use... Keurig immediately begins to heat up water and is ready a minute or so later, then it anticipates that you might want a second cup and heats up another cache of water. Tassimo is ready right away and starts heating the water when you push the button. Coffee comes out of the Tassimo machine faster, and rarely do I want a second cup right away. POINT - Tassimo.

Cup size... My old Keurig has three cup sizes 6oz., 9oz., and 12oz. Tassimo reads a barcode and dispenses a predetermined amount of water based on the info in the barcode. You can however, press a '+' or '-' button before or during the brew process to adjust the amount of water used. POINT - Tie.

Beverage variety... Keurig does coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Tassimo does coffee, tea, hot chocolate, espresso, cappuccino, latte, and cafe ole. POINT - Tassimo.

Beverage brands, availability, brand quality... The quality of the coffee is about equal between Keurig and Tassimo. The major difference here is that Keurig has way more variety and choice when it comes to the sheer number of brands and varieties of drinks, plus my favorite coffee is a Keurig-only brand/variety. POINT - Keurig.

Beverage quality... Both Keurig and Tassimo make a quality drink. POINT - Tie.

Build quality / warranty... Both excellent quality machine, both standard warranties. POINT - Tie.

Pod price... Apples to apples (coffee pods only, not coffee/milk pods), without any discounts, the least expensive Keurig pods cost between 61 cents (8 o'clock coffee - 94 cents (Starbucks) each. Tassimo pods cost between 50 cents (Maxwell House) - 79 cents (Gevalia Dark Breakfast Blend). POINT - Tassimo

There are some other differences that I thought were less important... Tassimo has a smaller water tank (-), Tassimo's water tank accommodates a water filter - I use filtered water so this is sort of a moot point (+), Tassimo is quieter (+), a second cup of coffee takes longer with the Tassimo (-), Tassimo take up less space on the counter (+), Tassimo's cup holder is adjustable - you can remove it entirely or it moves up and down (+).

Why I picked the T55 over the other Tassimo models... Simple: the (+) or (-) water adjustment capabilities. The other models allow you ADD water to the brew. This is something, based on my preference for strong coffee, I would probably NOT do. I would however choose to run LESS water through the machine and make the brew stronger.

Here's my recommendation:
1) If getting Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte, and Cafe Ole in addition to Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate out of your machine is important (this is me by the way), then the clear choice is Tassimo.
2) If however you only want Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate and huge variety is not really important to you then I still say go with the Tassimo; if anything, you'll save money on the pods.
3) Lastly, if you're blown away by the variety and choices of coffees and teas, then go with the Keurig (I THOUGHT this was me, turns out I was wrong... after I tried a bunch of regular and flavored coffees for about two months, I ended up sticking with one brand/variety afterall).
