Illustra Desk with Hutch Review

I purchased this desk from my local OfficeMax during the recent back to school sale. It was an amazing deal at half off plus 20% friends and family discount I printed off their website. Total this desk set me back just under $60 and it was practically a steal.

The store I bought this from did not have it in stock so they offered to ship it to me for free. It took about a week to get because it was backordered but the desk did arrive promptly. When you open the box there will be plenty of pieces so you want to make sure you have plenty of room to assemble it. There are approx. 30 wood pieces in this desk and the hardware is sealed in plastic. Your best option is to sort the pieces by letter and which part of the desk they go with. I created one pile for the hutch, one for the draws and file cabinet, one for the keyboard and one for the desktop and side pieces.

You will need a Phillips and a flat head screwdriver. I would also recommend if you have it available, to keep a drill nearby. The hutch is pretty easy to assemble and the instructions are relativity easy to read. If you have assembled kit wood furniture before, you will be in a good place. The hutch has one moveable shelf in the middle. The two door cabinets do not have shelves inside.

I assembled this desk all by myself even though the instructions suggest having a partner help you. What made the difference for me was not bolting the hutch to the desk top. In The instructions it has you run 4 bolts from the underside of the desktop into the hutch. Honestly the hutch is very stable and unless you have small children or live in an earthquake prone zone, this step could be considered optional. By not securing the hutch to the desk it allows for easier movement of the desk should you have to relocate it or decide to move houses.

The next steps are the drawers and they assemble quickly and are very durable. This is followed by the file cabinet and the back and side support panels for the desktop. The only reason and use I would suggest having the drill for is the screws that go in the soft back panel of the file cabinet and the back of the hutch. Other than these screws a regular Phillips or flat head will go far for the cam lock system used in this unit. The final step is fitting the desktop on the frame. If you attached the hutch to the desktop as suggested in the instructions, you will need assistance completing this. If you didn't you will secure the desktop to the frame and then place your hutch on top. You can purchase dowel rods and use the included wood glue to stabilize it if you see fit. Ultimately, not bolting it just gives you more flexibility should you need to remove the hutch for any reason.

Overall, this desk is labeled as an espresso color but it will appear black in most rooms. If I had the money at the time I would have paid up to $100 for this desk. It's really durable and has a good amount of space for storing items. The color is great; if you accidentally scratch the desk you can easily cover it with a black sharpie and not tell the difference. This is a good quality piece of furniture and I feel I can expect a good long life out of it.
